What is Broadband?
Broadband, Cable or ADSL is a cost effective fast alternative to the original 33Kbs & 56Kbs telephone connection and 64K ISDN conections.
Broadband, whether connected through the cable tv connection or ADSL over your existing analog or ISDN telephone connection, allows you to surf the internet and have full use of the telephone (providing you have one) simaltaniously.
Minimum broadband speed is in general 500Kbs which is approximately a 10 times faster connection to your service provider. Other speeds in general are 720Kbs 1Mbs and 2Mbs. New speeds available in some countries exceed 10Mbs.
Broadband is normally a single monthly charge coresponding to the connection speed you choose, giving (normally) unlimited access to the internet.
Read the small print from your service provider, some service providers place a download limit on the connection. This can have serious cost penalties if you exceed it.
What do you need?
- Computer with processor speed of 233Mhz or faster, 64Mb Ram. Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP. Linux, Macintosh, Unix or other operating system.
- Computer fitted with network card or free USB port for external USB ethernet adaptor.
- Existing telephone, ISDN or cable TV connection.
- Live in an area where the service is available
